How to Choose the Right Dance Style for Your Child

Choosing your child’s first, or next, dance class can feel overwhelming. Ballet? Hip hop? Acro? With so many styles to choose from, it’s hard to know where to even start. Which style will interest this kid but also help them grow but also make them happy and make friends?!?! We get it!

The good news: there’s no wrong answer. Every style builds confidence, coordination, and a love of movement. The best class is simply the one that lights your child up.

Here’s a breakdown of each style offered at Ark Dance Academy in Grande Prairie, plus a quick and easy quiz to help you find the perfect fit.

Not sure where to start? Take our quick quiz on the Ark homepage under the “Start in the Right Place” section and we’ll point you in the right direction. Keep reading to get an idea of each style from our perceptive.

Ballet: The Foundation of Movement

2

Ballet is often called the foundation of dance for good reason. It builds posture, balance, strength, and body awareness that carry into every other style. It’s allure is tutus, grace, elegance and powerful movements.

Ballet might be a great fit if your child:

  • Loves learning things step by step
  • Is drawn to grace and beautiful movement
  • Enjoys music and expressing emotion through their body
  • Wants a strong technical foundation for any style they pursue later
  • Bonus: if your kid LOVES princesses? this is the one

At Ark, our ballet classes welcome dancers from age 2 through adult with no experience needed.

Jazz: Performance, Personality, and Serious Fun

Jazz is where technique meets performance energy. It’s sharp, expressive, and built for dancers who love to be seen. Jazz combines musicality with athleticism. Think big leaps, turns, and choreography that’s made to entertain.

Jazz might be a great fit if your child:

  • Loves performing and has a natural stage presence
  • Is drawn to upbeat, high-energy movement
  • Wants to build technique without the formality of ballet
  • Thrives when they get to put their own personality into their dancing

Jazz is a fantastic middle ground. Structured enough to build real skill, fun enough to keep them coming back every week.

Hip Hop: Energy, Confidence, and Community

1

Hip hop is high-energy, expressive, and a whole lot of fun. It’s one of the best styles for kids who love music, want to feel cool, and need to move. Music is a big draw here… think heavy beats and grooves!

Hip hop might be a great fit if your child:

  • Has energy that needs an outlet (in the best way)
  • Loves current music and popular culture
  • Thrives in a relaxed, upbeat environment
  • Wants to build confidence and self-expression
  • BONUS: parents if you miss the 90’s… Hip Hop is for you too! We have adult classes 🙂

Our hip hop classes are a favourite at Ark for dancers who want movement that feels like them.

Tap: Rhythm, Musicality, and a Whole Lot of Fun

Tap is unique! Your dancer’s feet become the instrument. It builds incredible rhythm, coordination, and musicality in a way no other style does. It’s loud and full of the good kind of chaos!

Tap might be a great fit if your child:

  • Loves music and has a natural sense of rhythm
  • Taps their feet or drums on everything (sound familiar?)
  • Enjoys puzzle-solving – tap patterns are like little rhythmic puzzles
  • Wants something unique and a little unexpected

Tap is joyful, musical, and satisfying once it clicks. It’s a class that keeps giving.

Acro: Strength, Tricks, and Thrill

3

Acro (short for acrobatics) is dance meets gymnastics. It builds serious strength, flexibility, and body control, layering in progressions from basic cartwheels all the way up to aerials and walkovers.

Acro might be a great fit if your child:

  • Is always doing handstands or cartwheels at home (you know the one)
  • Loves a challenge and gets excited by mastering new skills
  • Wants to build core strength and flexibility in a fun, goal-oriented way
  • Dreams of doing tricks that make people’s jaws drop

Acro is deeply satisfying! There’s nothing quite like the moment a skill finally clicks.

Lyrical: Where Emotion Meets Movement

Lyrical is one of the most expressive styles in dance. It blends the technical foundation of ballet with the freedom and feeling of contemporary movement. Dancers use their whole body to interpret music, tell a story, and connect emotionally to what they’re performing.

Lyrical might be a great fit if your child:

  • Feels things deeply and loves to express themselves
  • Connects strongly to music and storytelling
  • Wants a style that feels personal and meaningful, not just technical
  • Is ready to explore vulnerability and artistry on the dance floor

Lyrical tends to resonate with kids who are a little more introspective. It gives them a place to channel big feelings into something beautiful.
