A Parent's Guide to Your Child's First Season at Ark

So your kid wants to dance (yay!). Maybe they’ve been twirling around the living room since they could walk. Maybe they saw a friend’s recital and haven’t stopped talking about it since. Maybe you just need one more activity to fill that after-school window before you lose your mind. No judgment here—all valid reasons to end up on this page.

Whatever brought you to us, welcome. We are so happy you’re here. Signing your child up for their first dance class can feel a little overwhelming when you don’t know a plié from a pirouette, so we put together the no-nonsense guide we wish every dance parent got on day one.

Figure Out What “Dance” Means

First, find their style! At Ark, we have many styles available so your kiddo can find what makes their heart sing! If your child is drawn to music videos and big group energy, Hip Hop is probably calling their name. If they love structure, elegance, and the idea of pointing their toes just right, Ballet might be the move. Not sure? That’s completely normal for a first-timer, and our team is always happy to help you figure out the right dance class for kids based on age, personality, and energy. We have multiple blogs on this topic AND we are experts now at hearing about your kid and placing them in the style they’ll love.

Second, find their level of commitment. This can take time but it’s important. They might love to dance for the social aspect. Seeing their friends, the community and the family. They might love performing and being on stage. They might love learning and perfecting new techniques. Whatever it is, we have the program for it. Our club program is for the casual dancer. Take as many or as little classes as you want and the vibe is chill. We have 12 week Sessionals for our littles because sometimes a full year commitment is too much for young families and sometimes getting you kiddo to go to class all year is a nightmare (we get it). Our pre-comp and competitive programs are for the dedicated dancer. The one who is happiest at the studio, always practicing at home and who wants more competition in their dance life. This program requires more time commitment and also does more competitions. We also have our adult programs… calling on you parents!

First Class Jitters Are Universal (For Kids AND Parents)

Here’s a secret: Almost every kid pauses at the studio door on day one. Some cry. Some cling. Some march in like they own the place and then freeze the second the music starts. All of it is normal. Our instructors have seen every version of “first class nerves” there is, and they’re trained to ease kids in without making a big production out of the wobbly moments.

For the parents watching through the door with their heart in their throat, also normal! It gets easier. By week three, most kids are begging you to get there early.

Here’s our tried and true tips for a smooth first day:

  • Chat about the first day with them a week before. Talk through what it will look like, what they might do, and what they’ll see you again.
  • Ask them questions! “What are you most excited about?” “How much smiling do you think you’ll do?” “Do you think you’ll be silly or serious in dance class?”
  • Welcome and plan for big feelings. Talk through a plan with them about what to do if they have big feelings. Have them let their teacher know, grab a sip of water, take a deep breath or whatever works best for your kid.
  • Have a special action or phrase that reminds them of you. Maybe it’s “every time you touch your shoulder, I’ll think of you and send you a hug”. Something to create connection.

2What to Actually Bring

You don’t need a dance bag worth more than your car. For a first class, you’ll want:

  • Comfortable dance attire – Check our dress code for your child’s specific style/class. Its in your email or your DSP portal.
  • The correct shoes for their class type (we can tell you exactly what you need before day one, so you’re not guessing at the dance store – plus we have extras don’t worry!)
  • Hair pulled back and out of their face – let us know if you need help with hair!
  • A water bottle, because dance is a workout disguised as fun – label it!!!
  • Mess free snacks ONLY if they will be there for more than 2 hours and have time to eat

Consistency Beats Perfection

Your dancer doesn’t need to be naturally gifted, flexible, or graceful to belong here. They need to show up. Dance, like most things worth doing, rewards repetition and love—not raw talent. The kid who comes every week and keeps trying will find worth every single time. Perseverance is one of our core values for a reason.

We also celebrate all learning styles, bodies and differences! There is NO need for perfection in our studio. We love your kiddo for exactly who they are and through every great and tough moment. Our goal is always good humans, not just good dancers!

You’re Joining a Community, Not Just Booking a Class

This is the part people don’t expect. Dance families become each other’s people. You’ll trade snack duty, cheer at recitals for kids who aren’t yours, and end up more invested in this season than you thought possible for an activity you signed up for almost by accident. That’s kind of the whole point of Ark. Creating a community where kids (and honestly, parents too) feel like they belong.

Lastly, come chat with us! We love to hear from you. We might be teaching (hello double life of instructor and owner) but we’d love an update, hi, how are you and everything in between!

Ready to get your dancer started? Fall registration is open, and class spots do fill up. Reach out to our team and we’ll help you find the perfect fit, no dance experience (yours or theirs) required.
