At Ark Dance Academy, we believe flexibility is one of the key elements in developing a well-rounded dancer. That’s why we’re excited to offer our Splits Club, a monthly program designed to help dancers of all levels improve their flexibility and achieve the coveted splits. Whether you’re aiming for your first successful split or working on refining your technique, this club offers both the support and structure you need to reach your goals! Why did we create this? Because there is absolutely nothing like seeing a kiddo’s face light up with pride when they achieve something. Especially something that requires so much dedication and diligence. 

Why Flexibility Matters for Dancers

Flexibility isn’t just about achieving impressive poses or greater range of motion. It’s a fundamental aspect of dance that enhances overall technique, prevents injuries, and supports graceful movement. When dancers are more flexible, they’re able to perform steps and routines with greater ease, poise, and fluidity. They also have more capability and ability to reach goals.

But flexibility doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a journey that requires patience, consistency, and the right guidance. That’s where our Splits Club comes in!

The Dark Side of Flexibility

About 10-15 years ago, the over-flexibility movement swept through our dance world and caused irreparable damages. While it can be impressive, pushing for excessive flexibility without the proper guidance can lead to serious injuries, including joint instability and muscle strain. At Ark Dance Academy, we believe in promoting healthy, sustainable flexibility. Our Splits Club is designed to improve range of motion safely, focusing on gradual progress and body awareness to protect joints and muscles. Flexibility is a valuable skill for dancers, but it’s essential to balance ambition with care for long-term strength and mobility.

What to Expect from Splits Club

Our Splits Club meets once a month and is specifically designed to target the muscles and joints essential for flexibility, especially in achieving splits. Here’s a sneak peek at what each session involves:

  • Warm-Ups and Safety Tips: We begin with dynamic stretches and mobility exercises to ensure muscles are warm and prepared. Safety is our priority, so we’ll cover tips to prevent overextending or injuring muscles.
  • Progressive Stretching Techniques: Our instructors use a variety of stretching techniques, including static and active stretches, to build flexibility progressively. This approach helps participants safely increase their range of motion over time.
  • Individualized Support: Each dancer’s body is different, so our instructors provide personalized guidance tailored to individual flexibility levels. We help every dancer set realistic goals and celebrate their progress along the way.
  • Tracking Progress and Setting Goals: Progress is a journey, and we encourage participants to track their flexibility improvements over time. With monthly sessions, dancers can see their growth from one month to the next, staying motivated to reach their goals.
