Starting Strong: Goal-Setting for the New Year in Dance

A new year brings a fresh calendar, a clean slate, and that feeling of possibility. After winter break, dancers return to the studio buzzing with energy, feeling excited for what’s ahead, with a couple yawns mixed in. We have ballet exams and competition season fast approaching and your dancers deserve to feel invigorated about their upcoming busy season.  January is the perfect time to channel that momentum into clear, achievable goals that will keep you motivated all year long. 

Why Goals Keep You Growing

Without direction, it’s easy to feel like you’re dancing in circles – literally! Goals give your training purpose, focus, and a way to measure progress. They:

  • Help you prioritize what’s most important
  • Keep you accountable and consistent
  • Provide motivation on the tough days
  • Give you a sense of accomplishment when achieved

Whether you’ve been dancing for years or just started, having something to work toward makes every practice more intentional. At Ark we are all about building humans, not just dancers. Teaching these foundations of intention, confidence, and accountability creates kiddos that are successful for longer than they are in our studios. 

Goals for Kiddos

Kiddos can do really well with goal setting if done right! Keep things age appropriate, use the opportunity to talk about HOW they are going to achieve and build along with them. Parents modeling behaviour is a huge motivator for kids and helps them quietly act and persevere. Try to break things down into smaller successes for them so they can carry over that feeling. Here’s the simple steps: 

  • Brainstorm with them – what do they want to do? Focus on things they care about 
  • Make goals SMART! Scroll down for more on this
  • Break things down – smaller measurable steps are more accessible for kids and will actually get done 
  • Find their why – talking about this can help their motivation 
  • Model behaviour – you’re their superheroes!

Types of Dance Goals – Technical, Performance, Personal

When setting your 2026 dance goals, think about the different areas you can grow:

  • Technical Goals – improving turnout, mastering double pirouettes, perfecting tap timing. Think “What has Ms. Lexi been saying a lot to me recently?”
  • Performance Goals – bringing more emotion to choreography, connecting with the audience, building stage presence
  • Personal Goals – building confidence, trying a new style, committing to a consistent practice routine

Balancing goals across these categories ensures you grow as both a skilled dancer and an expressive performer. Optional OTHER category – NON DANCE GOALS like helping your siblings out, saying kind words to your mom and spending time with your family all matter too! 

SMART Dance Goals 

Vague goals like “get better at ballet” are hard to track. Instead, make them SMART:

  • Specific: “Hold a balance in arabesque for 8 counts”
  • Measurable: Track how many turns you can do cleanly in a row
  • Achievable: Aim for goals that challenge you but are realistic
  • Relevant: Align your goals with your dance style and level
  • Time-bound: Set a deadline – such as achieving it by spring recital or summer break

The clearer your goal, the easier it is to work toward it. Our pro-tip! Write a family goal board. Put your top couple goals down and write a smiley face when you do that thing. This makes accomplishing goals a family project and you can all cheer each other on. 

Tracking Your Progress – Journals, Apps, Videos

Seeing improvement over time is incredibly motivating. You can:

  • Keep a dance journal for notes after class
  • Use a goal-tracking app to log progress
  • Record practice videos to visually compare then vs. now

Sometimes the smallest daily improvements add up to the biggest transformations. 

Another awesome tracking addition is writing down intention words for the year/season/month, and going back and comparing. This keeps things light but still gives that sense of purpose! Examples: 

  • Grow, Focus, Persist
  • Breathe, Calm, Peace
  • Kind, Compassion, Unity

Celebrate the Small Wins

Don’t wait until you’ve reached the “big” goal to celebrate – acknowledge every milestone along the way. Holding that balance a few counts longer, finally nailing a tricky step, or remembering all your choreography without hesitation are all wins worth cheering for.

Consistency and intention are the keys to growth in dance. As you move into 2026, set goals that excite you, track your progress, and celebrate your journey – every step (and pirouette) along the way.
