Competition Season Prep: From Routines to Recovery
The air in the studio is buzzing – costumes are arriving, music is blasting, and dancers are running routines “just one more time” (or maybe five more). Competition season is almost here, and with it comes a mix of excitement, nerves, and determination. Success on stage doesn’t happen by accident, it’s built in the weeks leading up to the big day. We prepare your kiddos for competition season as best we can… but the prep doesn’t stop at the studio.
Fine-Tuning Your Routine
Now’s the time to polish every detail:
- Run your choreography in full-out mode to build stamina.
- Focus on facial expressions and performance quality, not just steps.
- Ask your teacher for feedback on tricky sections and drill them until they feel effortless.
- Practice in your costume or rehearsal wear that mimics it – so nothing feels unfamiliar on stage.
As a parent or guardian, be thoughtful here – encouragement and support over coaching. You’re their biggest cheerleader, not their dance instructor.
Packing Like a Pro – Costumes, Shoes, Accessories
Being organized can save you from backstage stress. Create a checklist for:
- Costumes (with all pieces – don’t forget headpieces!)
- Shoes (labeled, polished, and ready)
- Accessories (jewelry, hairpieces, tights, backup items)
- Emergency kit – safety pins, double-sided tape, extra tights, hair spray, bobby pins, makeup remover wipes
- Snacks & water – easy-to-eat, energy-boosting options
At Ark Dance Academy, we know how absolutely WILD competition and recital can feel, especially when you’re new to it. So… we provide a downloadable Competition Packing Checklist so nothing gets left behind. We got ya!
Fueling Your Body for Peak Performance
Your energy on stage starts with how you fuel your body:
- Eat balanced meals with protein, complex carbs, and veggies in the days before.
- Stay hydrated – sip water regularly, not just right before you go on.
- Bring portable snacks like fruit, granola bars, or trail mix for quick energy between numbers.
- Avoid heavy, greasy foods right before performing, they can sap energy and focus.
This is tedious… but ideally the food you bring is MESS FREE. Because no one wants to deal with an applesauce pouch burst all over a white ballet tutu and a screaming toddler – trust us. We also wrote a whole blog about dancer nutrition for competition season – find it HERE.
Managing Nerves & Mental Prep
Even seasoned dancers get butterflies. The trick is to work with them, not against them:
- Visualize your routine going perfectly from start to finish.
- Use deep breathing or light stretching to calm your body.
- Focus on enjoying the moment and sharing your art – not just the score. A confident mindset is as important as clean technique.
Easier said than done right?! Our biggest tip to our dancers who get nervous is to speak up about it. You’re not alone – chances are the human standing next to you is thinking all the same things. Even if nothing changes, talking about how you feel can often help more than you think!
Post-Competition Recovery – Rest, Reflection, Celebration
After the curtain falls, take time to:
- Rest! Your body needs recovery after intense rehearsals and performances.
- Reflect on what went well and what you want to improve. Be your own cheerleader!
- Celebrate your hard work with your team – regardless of results.
The best competition performances are the result of consistent practice, smart preparation, and a balanced mindset. Take care of the details now, and you’ll be ready to shine when the spotlight hits. Also, remember – we got you!
