Back-to-Dance: Fun Ways to Kick Off the Season

There’s nothing quite like the buzz of September at Ark Dance Academy. The smell of brand-new ballet slippers, the sound of music spilling from every studio, and the excited chatter of dancers reconnecting after summer — it’s pure magic. We have been anxiously awaiting having all our dancers back in the studio again. We miss you all so much during the summer!

Whether you’re stepping into the studio for your very first class or returning for another year, the start of dance season is a chance to set the tone for the months ahead. This year will be filled with learning, growing and lots of laughter. We have been hard at work to bring another wonderful dance season to life! Here are some fun ways you and your dancer can make the most of this fresh start.

1. Create a First-Day/Week Ritual

The first bit back is special, so why not make it memorable? Snap a “first day of dance” photo outside the studio, wear a favorite warm up item, or start a new tradition like decorating your dance bag. You’ll look back on these little moments with big smiles. First days seem to be all nerves until you look back at them when you’re older and wish you could have a first day of dance again. Those memories last! Here some other ritual ideas:

  • Have your dance friends or siblings write their favourite thing about you on a piece of paper and tuck it into your dance bag – waiting for you to find it later
  • Grab an after dance treat with your dance parent!
  • Add some sparkle to your hair for the first day – put in a flower, headband, or braid to make the first bun special OR if you have shorter hair, throw in some spray colour!

2. Reconnect with Your Dance Friends

Dance friends are often like a second family, and September is the perfect time to catch up. Encourage your dancer to arrive a few minutes early to chat, stretch, and get back into the groove with their classmates. Strong friendships make for an even stronger dance community. These are lifelong bonds developing, cherish these moments together and prepare for your year together ahead.

  • encourage your dancer to be inquisitive about their friend’s summer activities
  • set up 20 minutes after dance to go on a walk together through Muskoseepi Park
  • Make friendship bracelets and hand them out at the studio

3. Set Your Dance Goals for the Year

A new season means new opportunities to grow. Goals don’t have to be big — they can be as simple as improving flexibility, mastering a particular step, or building confidence on stage. Write them down and revisit them throughout the year to celebrate progress. Try to use your SMART goal format to make achieving them a breeze!

  • S: Specific – be detailed about what youre going to accomplish
  • M: Measurable – if you cant measure it how will you know your progress?
  • A: Achievable – you might not get a quadruple pirouette if you cant already do a triple
  • R: Relevant – goals tailored to your solo or jazz routine to make them meaningful
  • Time-bound – add a timeline like in 2 months I want to be 1 inch closer to my splits

4. Try Something New

September is also a great time to branch out. If your dancer usually takes ballet, why not add jazz or acro? Trying a new style keeps things exciting, builds versatility, and can spark unexpected passions. We have some great opportunities to try new things!

Our September Sampler program is a 5 week long 1/week 30 min class where we teach 5 different dance styles! We have one class for 4-6 year olds and 1 for 7-10 year olds. This class runs Monday nights and you won’t want to miss it!

5. Keep the Energy Going at Home

Extend the fun beyond the studio! Taking your passion for dance outside the studio is a perfect way to nurture lifelong movement and creativity. Here’s some ideas:

  • Create a dance playlist for home practice – do your ballet barre to Taylor Swift!
  • Watch inspiring dance performances online – many ballet companies have great full youtube performances
  • Try simple conditioning exercises – cross training is THE best way to prevent injuries

Keeping dance in the mix during the week helps skills stick and enthusiasm grow. More connection as a family will also solidify those positive experiences.

A Fresh Start for Everyone

The start of the season isn’t just about perfecting technique — it’s about building memories, friendships, and a love for movement that lasts all year. From first-day photos to goal-setting, these simple ideas can help dancers step into September feeling inspired and ready to shine. We are building long term skills at Ark, we want to help build these little humans up and send them into the world with all the knowledge and passion.
