Dancing Into the Holidays: Creative Ways to Keep Moving Over Winter Break

The snow is falling outside, holiday lights twinkle in every window, and the sound of cheerful music fills the air. Inside, kids are giggling and spinning through the living room, feet tapping in time with the beat. The holiday season is here – and while routines may shift, the joy of movement doesn’t have to stop. We hope our ADA families have a MUCH needed break but also think of us while you move and groove this holiday season!

Why Movement Matters Over the Break

Between cozy movie marathons, delicious holiday treats, and late-night celebrations, winter break can be a time when regular activity takes a back seat (which is ok!). But even a few minutes of dance each day can help kids:

  • Burn off extra energy
  • Stay strong and flexible
  • Boost mood and confidence
  • Keep their skills fresh for when regular classes return

Movement isn’t just good for the body – it’s a way to keep holiday spirits bright. PLUS movement builds community – do it with them, parents and guardians!

Home Dance Challenges – 5-10 Minute Movement Bursts

No need for a big space or fancy setup – just a little creativity! Try these quick, fun challenges:

  • Holiday Freeze Dance: Play festive tunes and freeze when the music stops. PRO TIP – youtube will have music that stops for you so you can focus on having fun with them over pausing the music
  • Speedy Step Challenge: See how many jazz squares or grapevines your dancer can do in 30 seconds.
  • Snowflake Spins: How many turns can you do before wobbling? These micro-movement bursts can fit in between baking cookies or wrapping gifts.
  • Movement Challenges (for your older kiddos): Set a number of insert movement here your whole family has to complete over break. This is an awesome cooperative challenge that can involve everyone – even holiday guests! Make sure to record them somewhere and have a family focused reward ready!
    • Squats
    • Jumping jacks
    • Pushups
    • Plank seconds or minutes

Holiday-Themed Choreography – Dress Up and Perform for Family

Add an extra sparkle to your holiday gatherings by creating a short routine with a festive twist. Use scarves for flowing “snow” effects, dress in red and green, or even incorporate holiday props like candy canes (the safe, unbreakable kind!). A quick performance after dinner is sure to get everyone smiling – and maybe joining in. This also occupies your kids for a good 30-45 minutes! Let them pick the song and watch their imaginations run. PRO TIP – Dollarama has fun holiday headbands and hats for 2$ each, easy and super fun!

Cross-Training Ideas for Winter – Yoga, Stretching, Light Cardio

Winter break is a great time to work on flexibility, balance, and strength. Try:

  • Yoga or Pilates for body awareness and core stability – It’s all free on youtube! Charlie Follows is our favourite!
  • Dynamic stretching to keep muscles warm and ready – Watch this routine!
  • Light cardio like skipping, stair runs, or family walks in the snow!

Mixing these in with dance keeps the body well-rounded and injury-free.

Even during the hustle and bustle of the holidays, dance is a joyful way to keep moving, laughing, and connecting. So turn up the music, make some space in the living room, and let the magic happen.
